Cleaning products for your espresso machine

When brewing coffee, the shower screen comes into direct contact with the coffee from your filter basket. After each extraction, coffee residues remain on the shower screen. Due to the high temperature, these residues can quickly dry out and stick.

This not only affects the taste of your coffee but can also damage the rubber gasket, causing your portafilter to seal less effectively. That’s why it’s important to properly maintain and regularly clean your brew group.

Using a brew group brush

To clean and maintain your brew group, a brew group brush is essential. It allows you to easily remove coffee residues so they don’t affect the taste of your espresso.

After every espresso, coffee residues remain on both the shower screen and the rubber brew group gasket. Due to the heat, they dry immediately. That’s why it’s important to remove these residues right away, using a brew group brush and our barista cloths.

Cleaning the brew group with a blind filter

The first step in proper maintenance is cleaning your brew group daily or weekly with a brush.

As a second step, it’s recommended to backflush weekly with water and to backflush every three months using a cleaning agent.

For this, you use a special closed blind filter to loosen stubborn residues and other dirt inside the brew group. During backflushing, add a portion of Cafiza or a cleaning tablet to thoroughly clean the inside of the portafilter and the brew group. Also read our article about maintaining your espresso machine.

Is cleaning the brew group important for every machine?

Yes, absolutely. Every espresso machine with a portafilter has a brew group, so the buildup of coffee residues occurs with every machine. It doesn’t matter whether you use an espresso machine with an E61 brew group or a machine from Sage, Solis, Breville, or De’Longhi.

Please note that not every machine uses a blind filter for cleaning. Always carefully read the cleaning instructions provided with your machine.
