All about tamping mats
If you want to protect your countertop and tools from damage, a tamping mat is essential. The mat provides a soft surface to work on, so you’re no longer pressing your portafilter directly into the countertop while tamping.
It also helps you work more stably, as the rubber keeps your portafilter in place. In addition, your tamping mat is useful for catching ground coffee and water. It’s odorless and easy to clean.
Finally, a tamping mat doubles as a storage spot for your tools. After use, you can place your tamper and coffee distributor on the mat.
Which tamping mat for my espresso machine?
In our range, you’ll find two types of tamping mats: a simple flat one and one with a corner. Both help you tamp and keep your kitchen tidy, but each comes with its own advantages.
The flat tamping mat is more than just a piece of rubber or silicone. It basically fits into any home barista setup. It’s also easy to move around and can be placed next to your grinder to catch spilled coffee.
The corner tamping mat is available in two sizes, large and small. You place it over the edge of your countertop to tamp there. This makes it extra stable and gives more support when tamping. With one hand, you press the portafilter against the counter, and with the other hand, you can tamp evenly.
Do note that your countertop shouldn’t have rounded edges, otherwise the corner won’t fit properly.
Tamper mat and tamper: the espresso team
When you buy a tamper, a tamper mat makes the perfect match – and the other way around too. The tamper mat is also a great place to keep your tamper when you’re not using it. This way, the tamping surface of your tamper won’t get scratched or dented.
That’s important, because you don’t want coffee sticking to it or your coffee being tamped unevenly. And if you’re still looking for a tamper, make sure to check out our range!
Tamping mat or tamping station?
As a home barista, you might wonder whether to go for a tamping mat or a tamping station. If you’re looking for a tool that helps stabilize your portafilter, then a tamping station is what you need.
Using it is almost the same as with a corner tamping mat. The big difference, however, is that you don’t place the portafilter on the edge of the counter but inside the tool. This way, you don’t have to worry about it slipping off by accident.
On top of that, you can use it in any setup, you don’t need to stand right at the edge of your counter.
A tamping mat, on the other hand, is an accessory that helps keep your kitchen clean. It also gives you a place to neatly store all your tools.
