Why a convex filter basket? Hugo's experience

When I (Hugo) started roasting coffee beans at home, I kept getting stuck with light roasts. They gave hardly any crema and ran through way too fast, no matter how fine I ground.

Thanks to the shape of the Convex Filter Basket, I don't have to grind as fine and I still get a lovely shot! My medium and dark roasts taste sweeter and rounder too, the harsh edge is gone.

How does it work? Because a convex filter basket tapers towards the bottom, the basket itself builds up more resistance. That means you can grind coarser without your shot running too fast.

I recommend this basket to anyone who uses a bottomless portafilter and wants to discover what else their coffee has to offer!

My golden tip: do a short pre-infusion. It helps prevent channeling. Let a little water run onto the coffee first, let it rest for a moment, and only then start the extraction.

Tested against step-down baskets

We develop our tools by testing what really works at home. Hugo and Debbie are our resident tasters, so they tested and compared lots of convex and step-down basket shapes.

This convex filter basket came out on top, both in ease of use and in its effect on taste. With a step-down basket you need extra tools, like a tamper with a smaller diameter. With this convex filter basket you get a similar effect while simply using the tools you already have at home!

Convex filter basket for your machine

The Convex Filter Basket is available in 54 mm and 58 mm. Because of the depth of the baskets, it can only be used with a bottomless portafilter.

54 mm for Sage and more

Suitable for, among others, the Sage Barista Express, Sage Barista Express Impress, Sage Barista Touch, Sage Barista Touch Impress, Sage Barista Pro, Solis Grind & Infuse Pro, Solis Barista Pro and Solis Perfetta Plus.

58 mm for E61 machines

Suitable for, among others, machines with a 58 mm portafilter, such as those from Rocket, Rancilio, Isomac, Cimbali, La Marzocco and Kees van der Westen.
